Penny Dreadful, the new Showtime Series

Showtime's new original serious Penny Dreadful premiered last Sunday, May 11, and I couldn't have been more excited. From the creative mind of John Logan, the writer of films like Gladiator, Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Skyfall and many more, comes a new series that combines many of the horror stories and characters we have come to love over the years. Not only does the show have a great creator behind it, but it is directed by J.A. Bayona, director of The Orphanage, so it really does have all the winning factors on it's side. During the first episode, we begin to see the interweaving of the various characters through one central storyline with various branches here and there.

With an amazing cast not new to the horror genre, and a more than interesting pilot episode the show holds a strong promise from the get go. Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) and Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) seem to be our main characters thus far, adding in a heavy dose of Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett). Sir Malcolm and Miss Ives definitely have a past together and the episode opens to the audience stepping right into the middle of a "quesst" they are on and there iss little to no explanation as we witness all that unfolds. Of course, as with any good show, when one simple question is answered ten others arise, and we are just along for the ride.

To not spoil anything for those who haven't had the opportunity to watch the show yet, I will refrain from details, but I will say this: we are introduced to a few of our monsters in the first episode, but there are so much more to come! Overall Penny Dreadful started off pretty strong in my opinion, I am invested and I cannot wait to for tonight's episode. Catch it tonight on Showtime at 10pm ET/PT!
