The Bling Ring

The Bling Ring

blingring     After wonderful films like The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette, writer and director Sofia Coppola gives audiences another film to faun over this summer with the release of her latest project The Bling Ring. The lovely Sofia Coppola is sometimes criticized for her work because somefind it to be different, and of course in this society, different means “bad” or “boring”.

The film is based on the true events that occurred in 2008-2009. During this time, celebrity homes in the hills of Hollywood were burglarized by a group of teenage kids who later became known as “the bling ring”. I’m sure many of you remember hearing about these robberies on the news or on the internet. Some may even remember that one of the girls that was allegedly involved in the bling ring, Alexis Neiers, had her own show on E! called “Pretty Wild”. The movie follows the group of teens on their various outings and break-ins of the homes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Rachel Bilson, and Lindsay Lohan. Instead of making of movie that documents the guilty and serves as a lesson or form of punishment to those involved, Coppola follows these privileged teens that have an infatuation with a lavish lifestyle. She doesn’t glorify or reprimand their behavior, she interprets and tells the story through following the somewhat misfit Nick as he tries to be accepted by kids at his new school. Apparently breaking into million dollar mansions and grand theft was the way to fit in.

My final thoughts are purely good ones when it comes to Sophia Coppola and her filmmaking skills. I am such a fangirl for her work, but in this case I am not being biased. The film follows a very intriguing storyline and is extremely well made. Not to mention the dialogue and music choice really put youin the world of a teenager; it really is a wonderful film.
