One Eyed Doll Interview

21002 [Converted]

I was not able to get an interview with the band during their Vegas show because life happens but we were able to get an email interview and that was just as good. Their new album Witches talks on topics in American history that many would like to forget but should never be. The concept album is widely over looked although it shouldn't be. It is one of the hardest forms to write in and when done successfully you have a Tommy or a Dark Side of the Moon.  If you have no picked up a copy of Witches yet shame on you get on it now.

HS- How is the tour going?

Junior: The tour ended May 2nd in Sacramento, CA. It was amazing! This was our first headlining tour in many years and it was our best yet!!

HS- How did the idea of a concept album come to be?

Kimberly: I didn't set out to write a concept album, or any kind of album. It really wasn't planned. I happened to be introduced to the story of Mary Esty, who was executed during the Salem Witch Hysteria. I wrote a song in honor of her memory called, "A Rope For Mary". After that, I continued to read and got really sucked into the history of the entire event. The more I learned, the more moved I was to continue to write over the course of maybe three days. I was obsessed. I hardly took a break to eat or sleep. It just took over. The next thing I knew, Witches was a thing. Once we realized what we had, we ran with it. We started recording immediately and just knocked the album out ourselves. It was more like writing a song than an entire record. Very natural, very organic. It came from the heart.

HS- In the 50's after the Crucible was written Arthur Miller came across a lot of back lash for making it an allegory of McCarthyism. Miller refused to "out" people and comply with the committee. Do you think that it is ironic that a play write would be black listed for making a political statement that compared the trails to the red scare? Do you think that this could happen again in our society?

Kimberly: Indeed, it's interesting that Miller was the subject of a witch hunt, himself. This has and will continue to happen in various forms all over the world. The more we learn about events like the Red Scares and the Salem Witchcraft Hysteria, the better equipped we are to resist fear-based oppression.

HS-. What is your favorite concept album?

Junior: Animals by Pink Floyd.

Kimberly: Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd

HS- What have you been listening to lately?

Junior: I like the new Chvrches album. I'm a synth geek.

Kimberly: The new Soto album, Inside the Vertigo!! It's Jeff Scott Soto's new project. Loving it.

HS- Do you have any plans to complete another concept album?
Kimberly: No plans, but I did enjoy writing this one. I like to let inspiration make the call. I can't even tell you what genre the next album's going to be. I just write what I'm feeling.

One Eyed Doll at The Dive 4/25/2015

One Eyed Doll played at this little bar called The Dive over the weekend. Personally I was expecting some shitty sound only because of how the bar was laid out but much to my surprise and happiness this was not the case. Unlike some of the bands who played before, the OED had the perfect sound and high energy to back up their performance. Although it is only a two pieced band, you could swear that there are more people playing. There set has changed over the years, now including lights which looked cool from a video point of view but this only adds to their performance rather then detracts.

Some of the songs they played were classic like Committed, and Nudie Bar. These are great songs but I was expecting to hear a little bit more from the Witches album. They only played one song, Black in the Rye. The new album is so fantastic that more should have been added to their play list. I do understand that they only played for 50 minutes, which by the way shame on that bar, but if you are trying to promote people to buy the new cd more should be played from it. Some of the songs that were played however are classic that people would be looking for. I am sure that things would have been different if they had a full set. One day this will happen.

That is the only real complaint that comes from this show. Honestly Freeman was putting on a great show with her onstage antics, and like many people before her, Manson and Skinny Puppy, the niche adds to their show and gives them a one up to many of the bands that are out there now. In fact it is nice to have a laugh in between songs. Junior sounded great on the drums, I'm sorry I can't add to my comment but sound because I just couldn't see him. Aside from Kimberly entertain the audience with her in between song routines, she was playing the guitar everywhere. At a few points in the night she was on the floor with the crowd playing. This to I couldn't see all of because I was to short but what I could see looked very intense.

Overall it was a great show. It saddens my soul that a band of this talent is playing in a tiny bar. They have more talent then the DJs that are plastered all over Vegas. The DJs sell out huge rooms playing on a lap top but hard working musicians that actually write their music, produce it and spend that much time on a show only play in a bar. There is something wrong and fucked up in our society, But one day they will have their Almost Famous moments and playing the guitar in the middle of the floor will be a thing of the past.

Just a side note; I can't believe the ass hole band before they played through cake. I was mortified at the situation that happened and I couldn't imagine how they felt. I hope the bar doesn't look negatively on OED because it was not their fault. And that shitty band took away from their time on stage. The lead singer was bitching that he only had 25 minutes, well buddy welcome to the industry what do you think they play at Mayhem and Warped Tour? A small band like you gets less then that suck it up you are not on tour, the headlining band gets the most time. Its fucking life.
