Korn featuring Suicide Silence 10/23

Korn_Suicide_Silence_tour

Suicide Silence was the second band to play before Korn at the House of Blues on October 23rd. The stage was set up for Korn so there was not a lot of space to be had for the fairly large band but that did not stop them from keeping up a high energy. The band all moved all over the small HOB stage with the many amps that had accompanied the stage. They played a fairly large selections of songs from their discography including new ones like “You Can't Stop Me”. Probably the most energetic on stage was lead singer Eddie Hermida. He moved around everywhere and it some times it seemed rather spastic but not in a negative way, more in the sense that he was correlating how he felt with the music.

Death Metal has some of the best riffs and to see the various guitarists play them and hear it in person is quite amazing. During song “Inherit the Crown”, these plays were very apparent. It is always nice to hear things in person because it demonstrates the technical skill that is require for such bands. Some people get held up by how hard it is to hear what the band is singing and they forget to listen to the music. Death Metal has such a technical play that is listening to the music is as important as listening to the lyrics. As a standard theme of the night was how low the bass player could get onto the ground before they were simply laying there playing. It is amazing how far a player can get and still play. That in itself is some skill. This was a sold out show on the bottom so it was wall to wall people who were excited to be there and the band was equally excited to be playing on stage.

After Suicide Silence had finished there set, Korn came on to play. This was not some ordinary tour, this was the celebration of the 20th anniversary of their first album so for their main set it was just 15 songs that made us love Korn. It was amazing to see play. There was a lot of excitement from the crowd and despite the dumb ass next to me who came only to hear hits, Korn was playing to a very happy crowd. The walls literally vibrated with their set. Since it was a packed show it was hard for me to see much of the set since I am 5'4 and I hate being in the middle of a crowd. (which seems odd being a concert journalist). Despite that the little things I could see inbetween people shoulders were that of a band that was playing an album in pure gratitude of the fans that had gotten them to this 20th land mark.

The song that seemed to have every railed up, myself included was when Jonathon Davis came out playing the bag pipes for “Shoots and Ladders”. This was a song that I was wondering how it was going to be done, was he going to come out and play? What was going to happen? Once Davis hit the stage with the first notes of the bag pipes, the crowd went completely wild. Everyone around was freaking out because this was one of those moments that we all knew would be a rarity. This is the first time I have seen Korn so I don't know how often he plays this song but it does not matter, the fact is that is a hard instrument to play and we all got to be a witness to it.

After the amazing full length album set, Korn came out for their encore and played some of their hits which people want to see when they hear Korn is playing. It is appreciative that they added these songs on to an already long set list. There was no slacking when these songs played but rather the same amount of love and consideration was given to these songs much like the ones that had gotten them this far. Over all it was a great show for the bands that had taken the stage that night.

One of our favorite bands Suicide Silence, has been on the Billboard charts with their new album You Can't Stop Me. This is a great thing to be going on and if you didn't have a chance to catch them at Mayhem check out our Mayhem list and see what city they are coming to next and if it is near you. This is a great thing for metal, a genre that is looked over so much. To have one of our hitting 16 on the Billboard 200 America and 30 up in Canada, this is what we need to see more of. Congrats!

Summer is upon us which means that there is going to be a lot of shows and festivals coming our way. One of the biggest ones in the metal world in American is Mayhem fest. I was able to surprise Mark Heylmun of Suicide Silence with an interview. This band has a lot going on first they will be working on some European shows, then Mayhem and while that is going out they will have a new record out, You can’t Stop me, which of course everyone will have to go pick up. Heylmun had some very informative things to say about the upcoming tour, which is always great to know how the band feels as opposed to us, fans who have a lot to bitch about.

H.S.-  How do you like doing these big festivals like Mayhem?

Heylmun- They are so much fun. I can’t imagine what it’s like to headline one of those, like having to wait all day and then having to play to a bunch of tired fans. The audience gets a little worn out near the end but for us we always get prime spot, the middle of the day or even playing first on the stage to a bunch of people that go to these festivals. Its fun to just let go and plays in front of a bunch of people that have been looking forward to the festival for a month to a few months. It’s just an awesome thing full of energy.

H.S.- Do you think with how big and diverse Mayhem Fest is it brings in a bunch of metal bands and metal fans which creates a different kind of environment for every body?

Heylmun- 100%. We would not draw in all of those people by ourselves. A lot of those people are there for the experience, the experience all the metal and experience all the music that is going to be there. It’s just a big group of people that are there to have a good time.

H.S.- Which bands are you excited to be playing with for this tour?

Heylmun-  Of all the bands, most of all, the band that goes back to my youth, Cannibal Corpse and Korn. Those are the two that really stick out. They are also good friends of ours and we have done a lot of tours with like Darkest Hour and Emmure, Trivium those bands are all great too.

H.S.- You have done stuff with Jonathon Davis on your past records are there any plans for him to come out on stage with you guys?

Heylmun- We might be able to work something like that out. We have a 30 minute set and we are already trying to squeeze in all the songs that we want to play. If that is possible we will make it happen but I don’t know yet.

H.S.- Only 30 minutes on stage that is a short amount of time.

Heylmun- It is so short. That is what everyone gets on the side stages but that is what makes it high paced. You get one band, then another band and then another band and it just keeps going.

H.S.-  Have you guys figured out the set list completely or are you still toying with it to see what works out better?

Heylmun- We are still toying with it right now. We are going to be in Europe next week doing a bunch of shows which we are headlining so we get a little over an hour and from there we will see what works and what we want to play at Mayhem. There is not going to be any time during Mayhem to rehearse.

H.S.- Does it kind of make you miss Ozzfest where they would have a 45 minute set list even on the side stage?

Heylmun- The thing with Ozzfest is that they only have a five minute change before they have to get the next band on. Mayhem is great because they have two stages with 30 minutes and no changeovers. I really like how Mayhem runs. It’s always so smooth and awesome. 30 minutes is enough, it’s enough to make people stoked and leaving them wanting more.

H.S.- That’s interesting. What have you been listening to lately?

Heylmun- On the way up here, I was listening to some Deeds of Flesh, some Nile.

H.S.- In your ideal metal festival alive or dead who would be your line up?

Heylmun- The ideal metal festival, Pantera at the top, some Slipknot in there, Slayer, some Cannibal Corpse, Korn, Suicide Silence and that’s all you need.

H.S.- Sounds like a fun festival.

Heylmun- Yeah it would be great.

Mayhem Fest 2014

There are some interesting bands playing at Mayhem fest this year. Not that I really want to go with Avenged Sevenfold headlining. To be quite honest there are about 3 bands that I want to see, one that I interviewed is one of the ones I want to see, but for the most part I feel like I can skip out on this. Sure there are so many different kinds of metal that it would be a great way for other metal heads to meet new people or meet some hot chicks since some of these bands are the Journey of metal, but for me personally it is not worth hearing “Show us your tits” all day in 105 degree weather with 8 dollar water. I have been to this venue to many times to want to put myself through it. For some of you it might be worth it so I will post up the dates and what the band because hey go have a great time wear sunblock and drink a shit ton of water because it is going to be hot out there and for those of you who have never been to the Glen Helen, please drink water you will hate yourself if you don’t.
